PROVIDING PROOFS
by
Tom Saunders

Hi All,

The following is very related to the ''Gnostic Contemplation'' I just posted.  One of the biggest warnings to the Gnsotic is the misuse of thought and reason.....

Proving a fact or theory, or disproving it, is a matter of direct measurement. This can be in regard to the aspect of cause and effect, but pertains to demonstrable evidence regarding structure and form.

Prima Facie, Evidence

Demonstrable truths, are shown through direct observation. When for instance, the yard is proven to be 36 inches, and three feet, the observation can be seen as prima facie, as demonstrated and observed. Prima Facie refers to what is observed without the addition of further evidence.

A yard, as to length can be calculated in accordance with a statement of the problem, or fact. The fact is 'justified,' as a yard being 36 inches long.  This fact can be 'verified by stating the yard is also three feet long.  This comparison is the test for reliability, but it requires knowledge of previous facts, contained in reference materials, and this ''direct citation'' can be seen as proper 'doctrinal referencing.' This is necessary for showing the previously accepted perimeters of ''what is a yard.''

The above reflects the following sequence of events in providing proofs..."

1. A theory is stated as a fact, or statement of the problem.
2.  A theory or fact must be justified.
3.  A theory or fact must be verified.
4.  A theory or fact must be tested for reliability.
5.  The conclusion of this test must contain the correct referencing and citations, that complete the test, and serve to establish reliable measurement. This measurement is then subject to scrutiny and use in the scientific community, and the general public. It is then, that the particular fact can be accepted as such, or is considered acceptable.

Direct Citations and Parallels:

A direct citation in literature, or reference, can be called a parallel.  There are other kinds of parallels in academic study that are acceptable to showing both comparison, and contrast of forms and structures. They conform to the sequence above in establishing them as viable. This is how verification and justification works in regard to establishing a fact. There are several acceptable methods of scientific measurement but not all can be seen as prima facie.

In the case of literary dependence Karen King suggests the following criteria in determining the characteristic of viable literary dependence. The reference to this work is... (''The Gospel of Mary Magdala,'' King, Polebridge, 2003. pg. 110.)

1. Extensive word-for-word similarity, (citation).
2. Similar arrangement or ordering of materials.
3. Similar narrative context or meaning.
4. The use of a citation formula. (For instance each saying in the ''Gospel of Thomas,'' starts with 'Jesus said,' or someone talking to him, in an obvious schema. {My insertion} King uses, ''as it is written,'' and ....)
5. Use of language specific to the source work.

The ''Five Gospels,'' by Funk, Harper, 1993, pg. 544, states that a gospel parallel, is one where, ''In a gospel parallels or synopsis the gospels are arranged in parallel comumns with matching materials opposite each other.''

Statistical Analysis

Statistics is the science of classifying and determining numerical information. The most common purpose is to determine the center of a distribution. The terms used to indicate the center of a distribution are the mean, medium, and mode.

The mean is determined by adding the number of units, then dividing that some by the number of units, the result is an average number of units.  The median, is the value where half of the units in a set are larger or smaller than the opposite set of units. The median is the point where the set is divided.  The mode is the value, or set of like units that appear most frequently in a set.  A set in most science involving polarity, is called a field or pool, which connotes a perimeter of the form, or the unified body of the set, as a whole.

Polarity Science.

Ethnology, and Sociolinguistics use a type of analysis that can be seen as part of polarity science or the determination of how some or all units in a field are prone to being  one thing, or are attracted to one pole, over another, thus creating a medium and mode. While statistics work with mode, medium, and mean in terms of actual numbers, sociology uses the same methodology for measuring aspects of groups.

Polarity science can be thought of as that where measurement is based upon an attraction to a polarity or points where units inside a field show attraction. In a sexually mixed group of men and women, men-women can be seen as diametrically opposed. If there are more men than women the polarity of the group can be seen as dominant or positive mode for male. Exact percentages or numbers are calculated to establish number of units or types in the pool, or field.

Another way polarity science can be shown is in the study of Sociolinguistics where a particular identifiable sound made in speech, like the post vocalic 'r,' which identifies people from the same language pool.  If the same man-woman group is studied for the sound of the post vocalic 'r,' it can be shown who is from the same speech pool, regardless of sex.  Another example of this same kind of observation is by dividing the group as to code patterns as to who is more prone to ''now'' coded speech as opposed to ''elaborated'' codes. This follows a natural tendency in language to be one or the other.

A third way polarity can be shown in groups is to inject a 'slang' or unique word into the group, and observe how fast it travels through the group from person to person. This follows the traditional philosophical path of the group's economy. Study of a groups 'economy' is a standard tool in developing ethnology's, and in linguistics this trait of the economy is followed in language. Economy in a group represents a form of natural polarity.

Linguistics and ethnology are one use of polarity science. The use of this trait can be seen in the ancient study of Chinese philosophy, in regard to Yin and Yang, and the Tai Chi. Where statistical analysis is used to show the mean, the Tai Chi is used to show the extension of the polar opposites and similarities of opposing forces, as well as the center, or mean. It can show all of the traits of polarity listed above, when applied in correct ways, of using variations, instead of divination's, in the formula of the trigrams, of the icon of the Tai Chi. It is not unlike using a quadratic field. It instead is an ogdoad (8).

The models show either a linear perspective or flow or polaric energy within a field or along a path. The following shows truth and logic along a polaric pathway through points A. B. C., and D.

Corporeal forms are those in the form of matter, they are things.  A thought for instance, is a thing, that is not corporeal, and is not contained in matter. One device ancient philosophers used to show how logic could be determined is called the ''Square of Opposition,'' thought to have been devised by Aristotle.

Below I will use a similar device to show how Truth, can be determined, using Truth in place with Logic. The diagram below, from point A., to D., represents, the flow of energy of truth, and logic, through the form or structure, of the tetrad, as a form and concept. The field or tetrad represents a human thought. This thought is....

        True and logical    (A)- - - - - - -(B)  "Not true, not logical
| *           * |
  *       *
|     *   *     |
*
  |     *   *     |
   *       *
   | *           * |
Logical not true      (C)---  ---  ---(D)  True not logical

What the above diagram shows is, all of A. is true and logical, All of B., is not logical, All of C., is logical but not true, and all of D. is true but not logical. These are the considerations for determining whether a 'thought' as a non-corporeal form is measured for truth and logic, given that A. B. C., and D., represent the cause as operant, and the effect as true or logical due to possible cause and effects within the field of human thought.

Mapping on a quadratic field (or other, say an ogdoad, hexoganal field, or any chart) is another example of how polarity within a field can show tendencies of cause and effect. Carl Jung is noted for using the quadrants of feelings-thinking, and sensation-intuition.  These quadrants are used to map individual tendencies in a field, which in Jung's case is a circle.  The polarities of feelings, thinking, sensation, and intuition, are the poles in the field, which determines these aspects of personality.

In Jung's model, sensation is defined as conscious sensory process, and intuition is defined as unconscious, or sub-conscious, perception. In this schema these qualities are thought to be diametrically opposed in the human psyche, and therefor a person will be attracted to one or the other opposing force.

The quadrangle above is used like a map with exterior poles and an interior field. A person according to the polarity of thinking, feeling, sensation, and intuition, functions as an operant. This is akin to the concept of phase-structure-analysis, as used in science and industry.

Phase-Structure Analysis (Recording Events)

Phase is a distinct or characteristic period, and space, or 'stage' in a development of chain of events. Structure is the arrangement of parts in a form, or thing. Analysis is the separation of these structures and stages in the calculation of movement or form of the structures in the aspect of cause and effect.  Phase records movement, of the structure(s), by an arbitrary, but acceptable standard of calculation in measurement of the movement of the structure.

The movement or phase of structures recorded within a field, can show an ecrimental pattern, The movement of the structure can be seen to align itself with the grids applied to the perimeter of the field. This is what can be shown as mapping, which is not unlike using the yardstick to measure a thing. For instance the Behaviorist concept of, stimulus, operant, and reinforcement, as stimulus-operant-reinforcement (S-O-R) contingencies, are an acceptable way to record the operant space/phase, and the forms or structures in events.

In the course of recording events in both phase and structure, with common measurement, or devices like S-O-R formulas, the polarity is obvious as to the aspect of cause and effect. The thing happened, therefor the polarity is from point A, where the event started  to  point B., where the event ended. The operant space is the time and space from point A (The stimulus) to point B, (The reinforcement), and the operant is the 'thing' or object that is characterized in the event.

Human Perception

The aspects of measurement and science work within the framework of human perception. Establishing a recorded theory or fact is a matter of mutual agreement.  This agreement must be predicated on an accepted set of standards, that can be observed and recorded by a statistical majority of observers, and recorders.

If human perception is flawed then the principles of structure and form will not be shown as a match, proper sequence, or analogy in the form of thought.

Consider that the Gnostics figured out how to reason beyond prima facie evidence into what they called innefable, which means occult. The Sethian Monadology maps out the reason behind this mental power. (The Chinese prove the same quality of reason with the Tai Chi) Clement of Alexandria, showed the same kind of respect for science, in his explanations of demonstratable evidence.

Figure that what I wrote on the Gnostic Contemplation is carefully sculpted to the ideas above.  The idea of the ''Word'' in Sethian works fits with the idea of Enlightenment....

Enlightenment: Refers to a state of being.  ''The Enlightenment refers to a movement in philosophy that advocted the untrameled use of reason to establish truth. The movement challenged traditioal authority, doctrine, and values. Emphasis was placed on the empirical method employed by the sciences.''  (''The Five Gospels,'' by Funk, Hoover, Harpper-Collins, 1993, p. 544.)

some scenarios this is Seth, Adamas, (Adam), or Jesus. (See Pneumatic.  See Gaffney, p. 246.)
